Bad Managers Can Cause Premature Death!
A Survival Guide for Managers to Create Healthy High Performing Teams
OUR PURPOSE
It is well established that stress and dissatisfaction in the workplace negatively and significantly impact employees' health and well-being and performance. Studies and stories are abundant, here is one recent example:
"Working ourselves sick: The consequences of non-stop job stress include depression weight gain and heart disease" MacLean's May 17, 2010.
Unfortunatlely, managers in these workplaces contribute largely to this stress and dissatisfaction. This is not the only troublesome for employees, but it is difficult for the managers themselves, who are often lacking knowledge, skills, preparation and training for thier important role.
Our purpose is simple: provide tools and resources to managers so they can instead create healthy high performing teams. We want to contribute to lessened stress and dissatisfaction in the workplace, for employees and managers alike.
WHY THE BADMANAGERS PROJECT ?
Authors and co-creators Lisa and Rejean discuss why they launched yhis wesite and set of ressources for managers:
Lisa: Rejean, what finally made you decide to write about managing people?
Rejean: After doing training and consulting for over 14 years and interviewing both employees and managers on what they expect from each other, I always thought that it would be a great idea to share what I learned with as many people as I could. But what really helped me decide to turn my thoughts into action was a conversation with a particular manager: one day, after delivering a management workshop on how to motivate employees and get the best out of people, a manager came to see me and said: ‘You know Rejean, after these two days, I realize that I fired a lot of people for nothing in my lifetime and today, I am making the decision to become a person who builds people up versus one who tears people down’.
And you Lisa what was your motivation to start this project?
Lisa: I have really seen the effects of ‘bad managers’ on the health of employees in many workplaces. I have seen employees become emotional, take stress leave, experience migraines, ulcers and other serious health impacts as a result of workplace stress. I have heard how this stress affects their mental state and their home relationships. And I have talked to the ‘bad managers’ and believe the vast majority have positive intentions and just do not have the appropriate skill set and knowledge, or ‘how to’ of being a great manager. My motivation is to make some positive impact on the health, well being and performance of managers and employees in workplaces.
